  "Painting from Life vs. Photo

For me, painting from life is invaluable. Yes, it's a hassle if you're outside and it's windy, rainy, cold, misty, scorching hot, etc. But the observation that it entails (certainly inside as well as out) helps you learn about objects, form, perspective, color, shadow, reflection. For instance, I'm painting oranges, a partially rotten banana and fabric. What I learn from observing the orange, it's irregular shape vs. the perfect oval that you would expect; or the myriad of colors in the shadow, not necessarily just a darker orange will carry over when I paint a still life from a photo. I'll know how to put texture, color, shape on the painting of the orange even if the photo doesn't reveal the depth that observing actually does. I'll know what's really there. Painting fabric folds is difficult for me but the only way I get better is looking at actual fabric and how the light hits it, the weave in the fabric. Every time I paint from life I get better even if the product falls short of what I see or intend to depict.

Sally Probasco

I am a lucky person. I have had several careers—recreation therapist, student affairs staff member, academic adviser to graduate students, and most recently assistant city attorney. But now I am back to my first love, art, and happily call myself an artist. I’m working in watercolor and am fascinated with splashes of color as they drip on the surface of cold press watercolor paper and an acrylic gel medium surface. Subjects vary because there’s always something new to try. I hope you enjoy the adventure along with me.
